What is STEM?
The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities have defined STEM courses as those that belong to particular CIP codes. CIP codes (Classification of Instructional Programs) are assigned to all courses and programs. 01 Agriculture, Agricultural Operations and Related Sciences 11 Computer and Informational Sciences and Support Services 14 Engineering 15 Engineering Technologies/Technicians 26 Biological and Biomedical Sciences 27 Mathematics and Statistics 40 Physical Sciences 41 Science Technologies, Technician The Minnesota State Colleges & Universities system’s 2010 Action Plan includes advancing “student engagement, learning opportunities, industry responsiveness and supportive infrastructure in support of STEM- and health care-related areas.” The Action Plan Target measures include: Increase the percentage of students enrolled in one or more college level STEM courses by 2.9%, from 45.9% in Fiscal Year 2005 to 48.8% in 2011 Increase the number of secondary teachers prepared for licensure in math and science by 119 or 115.5% between Fiscal Years 2005 and 2011.
